When most students recount their daily routines, they talk about school, extracurriculars and downtime before going to sleep to restart this cycle. A lot of them don’t work part-time jobs despite the potential benefit of making a chunk of change.
At Baruch College Campus High School, it seems many students don’t get these jobs because they are too busy with schoolwork–although some Baruchians do think it’s possible to manage.
Senior Lucy Ngo got a part-time job over the summer as a server at an Asian fusion restaurant and recounted her difficulties doing many tasks by herself and socializing with customers.
Not having much experience also made it difficult for her to enjoy working .
Senior Roman Hruska works part-time at an ice cream shop in Richmond, Queens and faces difficulties of his own, but he had an overall good experience.
“I think the pay is kinda bad because it’s a dollar below minimum wage,” she said. “It is a lot of work and the hours are inconvenient, but overall I like it.”
Senior Mitchell Khurgin had a relatively good time working part-time as an event planner for a Brooklyn-based library. He said his experience was simply “nice.” He said it was not too difficult and also not too far out of his comfort zone.
Ngo understands why many high school students aren’t getting jobs as they’re busy.
“Being a senior, we have a lot of things to cover for colleges and a lot of things to prepare for,” Ngo said.
Hruska seconded this sentiment with his belief some students are just too busy with their school work, but he also said maybe some just don’t need to get a part-time job.
“I think they are trying to focus on school because they don’t need to work. The reason I started working was to help my family out with college and some people are fortunate enough to not need to do that,” said Hruska.
Khurgin thinks that shouldn’t stop students from working.
“They are lazy and have different interests,” he said.
Ngo said that even if somebody is unmotivated, they should still consider a part time job as there are many benefits to them.
“It [is] good to save income and to gain experience.”
