As Baruch’s Boys Baseball Varsity Team approaches the end of their normal season, the players are gearing up for the start of their playoff season.
John Jacobs, the team’s head coach and school’s Advanced Placement (AP) US History teacher said the season has been a bit of a bumpy ride when it comes to the team’s performance.
“This year has been up and down, but very recently we’ve started to round into form, winning four in a row and we are heading towards the playoffs,” he said.
This transition, he said, is continuing in a positive direction.
“The other day we played ElRo, generally one of our rivals. We’ve been successful against them historically, but this year they put together a pretty strong roster,” he said. “However, we managed to beat the life out of them, mercying them 12-2, which really makes me think that we can beat anyone that we play.”
Jacobs also said this season was a learning experience for him because this was the first year where all of the starters’ main sports are baseball.
Junior pitcher Raymond Needham had some thoughts to add about the season, which ended early for him after he fractured his elbow in a biking accident.
“This is my first year back on the diamond in a while, I used to play in a little league,” he said. “I currently play pitcher and I think that we [the team] have improved together quite a bit.”
Needham also thinks the team will be able to go quite far in the playoffs, even going as far to call the team a “dark horse.”
Sophomore Josh Gutner, the team’s starting pitcher, believes the team has a strong chance to go pretty far in the playoffs.
“I think we’re really strong and improving after every game. I’m really happy with my performance and I hope that we can carry our momentum into the playoffs,” he said.
With that being said, Baruch hopes to see their boys in blue reach the finals, and for their student body to start attending games.
