CommonApp essays being started, recommendation letters being requested and college counselors visiting classes to speak to students signal what season it is.
As Baruch’s juniors near the end of their third year at high school, the can of the college process has been unleashed.
Student Justin Alexander Shiu said he thinks the college process is fair, besides maybe exams like the SAT. However, he thinks he is a good test taker.
“You know, I’m feeling really confident in my SAT score. Although colleges are not really looking at the scores I think it should make a big difference,” he said.
Shiu also talked about how he felt Baruch had prepared him for this era and his dream school.
“Thanks to our three wonderful college counselors, I feel pretty solid you know… I am a huge NYU fan so when I heard there was a tour of it I immediately signed up.”
Oliver Johnson had some comments about his experience with the college process as well.
“I think Baruch has prepared us to the best of their ability. Because our grade has around 150 students, the college advisors are able to take a closer look at us individually,” he said.
He also shared his feelings about touring schools.
“I love spending time with my family, so touring these colleges with my mom and dad is very special to me,” said Johnson.
He said the colleges he toured were pretty and he enjoyed the opportunity to explore places he otherwise would not have.
Johnson wishes to go to Princeton.
“The history of that institution appeals to me, and I want to right the wrongs of my dad because he got in but didn’t go,” he said.
Youssef Mohamed also shared the colleges he wants to apply to.
“I am only applying to CUNYs and SUNYs because I want to stay close to my family, and I think going into debt for college is [a lot],” he said. “I’m going to just chill at Baruch College.”
