With a rocky start of the season with a tie and loss, the girls soccer team’s hard work and determination finally paid off this Monday when the girls earned their first win of the season with an exciting 4-1 match against School of the Future.
The game started off strong with senior Dakota Martinez-Jenkins scoring the first goal of the game. Martinez-Jenkins feels confident going into this season but emphasizes the importance of the team aspect in soccer.
“It’s a team sport,” said Martinez-Jenkins. “Anything you play with other people, you have to take in consideration that there are other people that are playing with you. You want them all to get goals.”
Senior and captain Marilyn O’Day thinks the team is doing just that. O’Day said, “We have a legitimate team where everybody is working together to try to score goals and that’s what you see in our goal distribution.”
Freshman Molly Lewin was one of four players to get a goal this game, with this goal not only being her first of the season but also her first goal as a Baruchian.
Lewin was not the only one who earned her first goal this game. Senior Jasmine Chalpeno-Luna—who joined the team in the beginning of the school year—got her first goal on the team in Monday’s game.
“Everybody crowded around her [Jasmine],” said O’Day when recounting the game. “We felt a lot of team pride just ‘cause we know we worked for it.”
The victory was not only an exciting one, but one that boosted morale as the girls look forward to their next game against Institute for Collaborative Education in Randall’s Island Field 81 this Friday where they hope to see support from Baruchians.
“We love school support,” said Martinez-Jenkins.
