At BCCHS, there is definitely a very small community vibe. Having a small school has its perks, like everyone knowing each other, which creates a great sense of belonging.
It is cool how students from different grades can get along easily, with seniors often sharing their wisdom with freshmen and other underclassmen.
Though a smaller school size can also have its downsides. Some students might feel a bit isolated or wish there were more activities to participate in. Instant cliques can also form, making it harder for new friendships to be created.
Since the school is small, students have their favorite hangout spots during free periods. Different grades tend to sit in specific areas, like the cafeteria or the second floor. Many students also find comfort in various classrooms, especially since many interns work for teachers and build those connections, making it a safe space to chill.
One of the most popular spots has to be the library on the fifth floor. Kids love it there because it is so inviting. It is also spacious compared to other rooms, and there are cozy spots to do homework, relax or just hang out with friends.
Madisson Carrasquillo, a junior, shared her thoughts about the library.
“I find myself coming back to this spot very often, almost everyday. I sit in the library to socialize with friends, to relax and to complete or get a headstart on work,” Carrasquillo said.
However, not all the kids use spaces like the library, which could be seen as a more conventional place to hang out. BCCHS students have become more creative with their hangout spots.
Isabella Galeano, a junior, said, “I usually sit on the radiator on the fourth floor. We hang out there in the mornings before class starts and sometimes during free periods. It’s a chill spot where we can just relax, talk, and catch up since we don’t always get to see each other or talk much during class,” said Galeano.
Simon Lu is a math teacher at BCCHS and often has students sitting in his room.
“I welcome students to come to my room whenever they need a comfortable place to eat. If the lunchroom feels overwhelming for them, I think it’s perfectly fine for them to have a safe space where they can relax and enjoy their meal,” he said.
Within the school there are many spaces where students can go in order to hang out and destress from the school day without having to worry about the crowdedness in the cafeteria. The teachers in return open their classrooms for students to enjoy.
