Surrounded by shelves of knowledge, endless possibilities and an unknown wonderland? That’s the library! When thinking of libraries, immediately rows and rows of books pop into peoples heads. But more often than not, many people are not there to use or borrow the books off the shelves.
Students of Baruch College Campus High School have access to the Baruch College Library, allowing students a relaxing, stress-free environment to study, hang out with friends or just a place to put one’s head down and rest.
Student athletes are a big population of students who use the library. Junior Aidan McNary, a Baruch Basketball Varsity player, uses it as a way to have some productive downtime between the end of school and the beginning of practice.
“For me, the library serves as a relaxing area to wait out a long time between the end of classes and the beginning of basketball practice,” said McNary. “In the library, I’ll take a break and sit back or socialize with friends while completing homework.”
Non student athletes occupy the space as well. Junior, Hana Ahmetovic, highlights the benefits of working in the library in particular.
“The Baruch College library is a great spot I go to to get my homework or any studying afterschool. It’s pretty quiet which keeps me from getting distracted, which helps because sometimes I feel like I can’t study at home,” she said.
Studying in a library can most definitely take away most of the stress that someone would face at home. It’s hard when a parent is yelling at their child to do the chores, the other is telling them to find the remote and their siblings pester them for favors.
There are still many people who don’t utilize the Baruch College Campus Library regardless of its numerous ways to be used. A junior, Ethan Savranskiy, points out that many are unaware of the library’s access.
“I don’t utilize the Baruch College library as I feel like our school doesn’t really communicate the fact that we have access to the library very well,” said Savranskiy. “When they do briefly mention it they don’t tell us how to get into the library itself.”
This sentiment is not only limited to Savranskiy. When asked, many students said they had never been to the library and more frequently than not, people who have never visited the library don’t even know how or where to enter the library from.
Baruch students can enter the library by swiping their ID card with their card ID security system in the Newman building on 151 E 25th St.
At the end of the day what Baruch students have is a huge utility and an upgrade from most highschool libraries.
Junior Nusiba Momo said “The Baruch college library being a street away and being a BCCHS student is one of the biggest advantages.”
