In a school known for its talented basketball and volleyball teams, our very own Baruch girls badminton team is creating a name for itself. Despite the team being a relatively new addition, the team is bringing a new sense of pride to our sports community. While badminton may not yet be a widely recognized sport in New York City, with only a few PSAL teams citywide, this team has so much going for it—and they are just getting started.
“This is only our second year having a badminton team,” said Coach Tedi Schafer. “Some of the teams we compete against have had programs for many years, so it’s a great experience going against seasoned players. It’s been very beneficial to our program.”
The team’s founding has also built great relationships. Junior Susmita Paul said, “This year we have a lot more sophomores rather than upperclassmen. I think that’s crucial because it builds connections.”
Schafer agreed that the team’s cohesion is instrumental to its success. “We have a great group of competitors who encourage each other which is a great way to experience being a part of a team.”
A typical practice session runs weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. They focus on creating a competitive spirit while building their skills with serving, smashes, or rallies. However, they do incorporate fun games like Queen of the Court or team tournaments to strengthen their abilities.
“A session will focus on a skill for the day like serving or strokes,” Schafer said, “then we usually compete.” Since the team has been able to play against more experienced and challenging teams across the city, they are being pushed to become even better on the court.
While their spirit remains strong some admit their kindness can impact their matches.
“Well I think it’s a strength but it could also be considered a weakness. All of us are really nice. Instead of scoring a point we want to play—which is kind of hard since it’s a competitive sport,” Paul said.
There are also techniques the players are looking to sharpen. “We can improve on our backhand and forehand when the birdie lands low,” said Junior Queenie Chen. “We’re practicing with stronger shots too.”
Being a new team does not diminish anyone’s efforts and dedication to their team, there is a lot of pride and hope for the future. “We have a great group of competitors who encourage each other, which is a great way to experience being part of a team,” Schafer said. “We’re still very inexperienced, but I think with time we will be more competitive and there’s so much room for improvement, which is amazing.”
The players are also hoping for more recognition around the school. “This team wasn’t really shown in our school and fewer people know about it,” Chen said. “I wish more people could know about this team and support us.”
With increasing support, talent, and unmatched team spirit, It is clear that the Baruch girl’s badminton team is only just beginning. As Coach Schafer put it simply, “Baruch has a bright future in regards to badminton.”
