On your walk to school you may have noticed a new art installation. This is the latest installment of art installations in Madison Square Park.
This display is the latest addition to the park’s rotating series of art exhibits — and this time, the featured artist is Larry Bell, a renowned sculptor known for his contemporary glass boxes.
Bell’s large-scale glass sculptures are now across the park, reflecting light, color, and the city skyline. But behind each gleaming box lies a team effort. Installing even a single piece takes careful planning and coordination from a dedicated group of volunteers.
Carol DerSarkissian, a volunteer, answered why she personally sets the time aside to volunteer,“I love art and I enjoy art. But I also love seeing the process. It’s given me a new appreciation for art and the preparation that goes into it.” said DerSarkissian.
For DerSarkissian, volunteering is about experiencing the transformation of the park itself. “It just adds another dimension to walking in the park and it’s just so beautiful. Just gives you a touch of enjoyment throughout the day.”
When asked to describe the installation in one word, DerSarkissian didn’t hesitate.
“Luminous.” she said. “When you look at these pieces at different times of the day, you’ll see the sun come through or maybe it’s a little dark and every time you look at it, and the light comes through you see these beautiful shapes you weren’t expecting or didn’t see last time you looked at it.”
Bell’s installation is more than just art — it’s an ever-changing reflection of New York itself. Whether you’re rushing to make it to class on time or taking a quiet stroll, Madison Square Park now offers a moment of light, glass, and a modern surprise waiting to catch your eye.
