The Baruch 2022 Baseball Season Has Officially Begun

Maximus McElroy, Head of Sports

As the weather slowly starts to get warmer it brings the beginning of the baseball season. After a very successful season last year going undefeated in league play, the Blue Devils look to continue their dominating performance against rival schools. The team will be led by returning head coach John Jacobs. He is a Baruch alumn and currently teaching. When asked about what he likes most about being a coach, John said, “I love the feeling of May baseball in Central Park with the sun burning my neck and a pocket full of sunflower seeds.” But on a more serious note, his expectations for the season are nothing short of flawless; “The feeling around the team is that anything less than a trip to MCU Park will be a disappointment. The roster is as strong and deep as it’s ever been, we have a lot of veteran ballplayers primed to make a deep run.”

Former Coach Jake “Latif” Ourvan recalled, “My favorite things about coaching were the bonds that I was able to create on and off the field, I am most excited to see the happiness of our players when they win a city championship.” Jake was known on the team as a great motivator and always made sure players gave a full 100%. “Nobody Better, and Finish your food” were things Jake would always say to keep the team focused. We wish the best of luck to Jake at his new job and pursuing his career in psychology.

While the team lost some key seniors, including last year’s MVP, Ian Burgoon, they gained major additions to the roster including Senior Carlos Castillo who missed last year with an arm injury. Committed to Hamilton College as a pitcher, Carlos is also a staple behind the dish known for his cannon of an arm with the constant display of power in the bat. “I’m incredibly excited to be back on the field. I’ve never been more confident about myself and about this team” said The Los. The feeling is mutual throughout the team. Everyone is looking towards a great season.

Further looking into the player’s point of view as many are happy to start a long-awaited season we asked junior pitcher, catcher, and outfielder Michael Novick on his outlook on the season. “I’m looking forward to playing as hard as I can play every game and winning Baruch a championship.” Michael, along with others, are excited to give it their all this year. The Blue Devils look to put together a strong season and come up big. There is no doubt that the Blue Devils have the talent to make it to MCU Park. With a long season up ahead, Baruch looks to fight hard and get some wins!
