Ultimate Frisbee combines elements of soccer, basketball and football, keeping players moving constantly. What makes it different from other sports is the Spirit of the Game — players are responsible for fair play, respect and honesty on the field.
The goal is simple: move the disc down the field through passing until a teammate catches it in the end zone. But the game is far from simple. Players need to sprint, cut, throw accurately and work together as a team. Because of this, teamwork and communication are essential for any team to succeed.
This year, the Baruch Ultimate Frisbee team is starting fresh. After finishing third in the Club B Division last season, nearly 80–85% of the roster graduated— leaving a lot of new players to step up.
Leadership and Captains
With many experienced players gone, leadership is more important than ever. The team will be guided by new coach Jacky Zhao and returning coach Jerson Yang, who founded Baruch Ultimate in 2022.
“Last year, most of the team graduated, but it’s exciting to see how the new players come together and try to make a run for the trophy,” Yang said.
On the field, juniors Jason Situ and Jayden Kong will serve as captains, helping younger players, organizing practices and keeping the team coordinated during games.
Players Step Up
Many of this year’s players are new to Ultimate Frisbee, but their energy and dedication stand out. Junior Lathan Chen discovered the sport at the start of the school year
“I started playing Ultimate Frisbee during soccer season when Jason brought a frisbee to the field. We started throwing it around, and it was actually really fun.”
Chen also highlighted the importance of leadership, “The team has great leadership. They make sure everyone goes to practice and gets in shape to start the season and win games.”
Junior Chace Mercado joined after seeing friends play and quickly grew to enjoy the sport. He believes that teamwork and communication will determine how far the team can go this season,“If we communicate and work together as a team, we can really do well this season.”
Building Chemistry
With so many new players, developing chemistry is essential. Players need to work on handling the disc, cutting, and trusting each other on the field. Coach Yang emphasized consistent effort:
“The number one thing is showing up to practice day in and day out. The more touches you get on the disc, the more comfortable you’ll be during game time.”
For players like Lathan and Chace, learning from captains and coaches while building confidence with teammates will be key to becoming competitive.
Looking Ahead
Even with a mostly new roster, the Baruch Ultimate Frisbee team is confident about the season. With dedication, teamwork and strong leadership, they hope to continue the success of last year and compete at the top of their division.
“What makes a good team is passion and intensity to win,” Chen said. “If everyone is hungry to win, it can lead us to a championship.”
With a mix of new players and experienced guidance, the team is ready to take on the challenges of the season and build a strong foundation for the future.
