The spirit of Christmas comes from many places: traditions, baking, movies—but most of all, Christmas music. As soon as it’s December first, the 25 days of top Christmas songs officially begin, and who better to get you into the holiday spirit than the mother of Christmas herself, Mariah Carey?
Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York, on March 27, 1969. Mariah Carey started her singing career in 1990 with the release of her album called “Mariah Carey.” Her music is a blend of different genres, including pop, R&B, and soul. Her most famous song in 1990, “Vision of Love,” kicked off her career because of her unparalleled vocal talent. Her first Christmas hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” was released on October 28, 1994.
This song immediately attracted the attention of many because of Mariah’s catchy tone and powerful voice. Mariah Carey’s passion for singing came from her background and her desire for music to be a lifelong escape from her difficult childhood.
Many of Mariah’s fans don’t know that she is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which affected her deeply, as she experienced many mood shifts that were hard to manage in her early career. She felt a lot of work pressure because being famous and having to perform made her symptoms worse at times.
Every season, Mariah Carey is known to “unfrost” on November first because of how strongly she is linked to Christmas. Being known as the “Queen of Christmas,” from January to October fans say that Mariah is frozen or hibernating until November hits and she finally unfreezes. That is when fans know that Christmas has officially begun. With the influence of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the holiday tradition of Mariah Carey defrosting through the iconic “It’s Time” clips has made the joke even more popular.
Personally, I love when the iconic “It’s Time” clip comes up on my For You paige because I know she has unfrosted and that it is time for the holiday season.
Sophie Young, a junior at Baruch, said, “I think this tradition has especially taken off because of social media. On November 1st, when Mariah Carey posted her iconic ‘It’s Time’ video on TikTok, it got millions of likes in just a few minutes. It’s quite impressive and a great reminder to get me into the holiday spirit.”
And with that, let it be known that “It’s Time.”
